UPDATE: Representatives of the Durham Diocesan Board of Education attended an interview with DfE in early February 2019. The interview gave us an opportunity to further elaborate and explain our plans to establish Wynyard CofE Academy. We are now hopeful that we will hear whether the application has been successful, possibly, in late spring 2019. We are positive and will of course notify our supporters, when we hear, whether the school has been approved to move into a pre-opening phase.

A New Church of England Secondary School in the Wynyard area

An application to establish Wynyard Church of England Academy, a new co-educational secondary school, will finally be submitted to the Department for Education in November 2018. We thank all of our supporters for their patience and for continuing to offer their support during the past year.

The school is being proposed by the Durham Diocesan Board of Education to help meet the growing need for additional high quality secondary places in the Wynyard area and also to give families additional choice of a high quality education with Christian values and strong pastoral care for their children.

If our application is approved, we plan to open with six Year 7 classes (180 places) and admit the same number of Year 7 pupils each year thereafter until reaching full capacity.

Wynyard Church of England Academy will be free to attend and will be highly inclusive, have a distinctive Christian character and will offer its students the opportunity to grow and develop within a broad and balanced curriculum framework under-pinned by Christian values. The new school will be open to students from families of all faiths and no faith where everyone will be welcome and feel they belong with an excellent pastoral support within a caring high-expectation ethos and an emphasis on moral values. The school will offer a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares students well for higher education or employment. This will be a family friendly school with breakfast club and after school provision offering a wide range of enrichment activities.

There is clear need for a co-educational Church of England secondary school in the area, and this new school will provide an excellent continuation of learning for children in the Church of England family of Durham Diocese schools, as well as those families of other faiths and no faith who wish to see their children succeed in a safe and inclusive environment.

If you have not already registered your support you can still help make this happen! The plans for Wynyard Church of England Academy will only become a reality with the support of the community. In our application to the Department for Education, we need to demonstrate the level of support for the school, particularly of parents with child(ren) due to start secondary school from September 2021.

If you are a parent of a child for whom you would consider Wynyard Church of England Academy, please register your support.

If you do not have a child starting secondary school but support this proposed school, please email us at david.noble@place-group.com

Thank you – your support will help make our vision for a new Church of England Secondary School in the Wynyard area become a reality.
